Poetry · Pride

My name sake
Ment to mean faith
Has inherited multiple definitions
The meanings I’ve worked for
The words and phrases put on me without permission
Only a women
Young and naive
Just a black girl
Imani has become a battle
One I was born into
But will proudly fight for
My skin is my name
Those who have carried it before me
I smile and wear it for you
My name is my reminder
My goal
What would I be without Imani
